Miss Ellen Terry

 Ellen Terry clerihew

For 24 years, Ellen Terry, an English actress of the 19th and early 20th century, had a professional (and some say, personal) relationship with Sir Henry Irving (originally Henry Brodribb), the first British actor ever to be knighted.

Trivia: The actor John Gielgud was the grandson of actress Kate Terry and the great nephew of Ellen Terry.

Unverified trivia: Henry Irving’s sympathetic portrayal of Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is said to have influenced the popularity of the given name “Irving” in Jewish families for several decades following his performance in the role.
